You may still have some questions regarding our products. Here are some answers for you. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact us.

1. What are the shields made of?

The E36 shields are constructed of aluminum, insulated on the outside (matches the hood insulation) and the inside is powder coated to deaden some of the noise. ECIS was the first company to double insulate a BMW heat shield. The top is weather stripped and seals against the hood when it is closed. The front attaches to the radiator post and basically uses the same air intake as the stock air box.

The E46 323 and 328 shields are constructed of aluminum, insulated on the outside (matches the hood insulation) and the inside is powdercoated to deaden some of the noise. ECIS was the first company to double insulate a BMW heat shield. The top is weather stripped and seals against the hood when it is closed.

The E46 325 and 330 shields are constructed of fiberglass with a resin black gel coat. Fiberglass does not need the underhood insulation because it does not conduct heat like aluminum.

2. Is it easy to install?

We include detailed instructions with each kit and with basic hand tools (10mm socket wrench and a flat head screwdriver) the installation should take about an hour. There is no cutting or modifications to make to the kit or the car. If you ever decide to put your stock air box back in (as when you bring your car in for service and you don't feel like hearing the dealer tell you that this intake will void your warranty & & ) you can reverse the process and no one would know.

3. How is it different from those "home made" shields?

Most of the shields that we have seen only seem to address the problem of fan wash. Their open design will allow engine heat to still enter the intake system and on a hot and humid day that can actually mean a loss of horsepower. Our shield is a closed design and minimizes engine heat from entering the intake while maintaining and directing the flow of outside air as originally design from the factory. Our inlet tube extends and angles the ECIS filter close to the outside air source to assure an ample supply of outside air. Also, all intake parts are heat painted or powder coated with only the best finishes available.

4. Why is the E36 Euro kit so much more expensive than the regular kits? (And why is it for 95 M3's only?)

The main reason is that the Euro Kit includes several extra parts that make the kit more expensive and yields more horsepower and torque over the standard kits.  In addition to the custom heat shield and larger inlet plumbing, the Euro kit comes with a larger European M3 air flow meter, custom software to work specifically with the larger air flow meter, a custom billet reducer, and an extra connection tube with clamps.  The power gains from the larger air flow meter and chip with our cold-air-intake are significant; 21 rear wheel horsepower and 17 rear wheel lbs. of torque.  The Euro kit is for 95 M3's because it is only adaptive to OBD-I Bosch engine management.

5. I live in California, are ECIS Intakes CARB legal?

Yes, our BMW line of intakes are CARB Certified for both the visual and the tailpipe emissions tests. Click here to read more on this subject.

6. Is there really any difference in temperature?

We have conducted tests and have shown a temperature difference of 80 - 90 degrees from the engine side of the shield to the filter side.

7. Why did you switch from K&N filters to your own brand?

We have changed from K&N filters to our own brand for two reasons; price and availability. K&N would not let ECIS become a direct distributor of their filters, which keep the price of the filter very high and we had trouble getting adequate supply of filters from their distributors. With that said, ECIS has contracted a company to produce filters to our specs and we always have plenty of filters in stock. Our new filters have larger pleats and the same cotton/gauze material as a K&N. The new filters come in a cool blue color (better than pink!) and we have the blue cleaning/recharging kits to go with them. Our new filters also have a superior velocity stack (rubber connection point to inlet pipe) in comparison with the K&N which does not aid in flow like the ECIS filter. Rest assured that you are getting the same quality and protection from the ECIS filter. Guranteed for the life of your car.
